The basic proposition of this presentation is that physical education has failed in the United States and is threatening of failing in other countries around the world. Incidents of obesity and overweight have tripled in the last 20 years in the United States. The projected lifespan of the current generation is less than the previous generation and is the first time in history that this phenomenon has occurred. Poor nutrition, reduced physical activity and the failure of physical education curriculum to communicate and influence children and youth lay at the root of the problem. Further, specialization has robbed physical education of the power of synergistic opportunities. A solution has been the development of a unique contextually based, total immersion graduate program in the physical education teaching, with an emphasis on technology at the University of Northern Iowa.
