Abstract

American society is deeply committed to academic and professional excellence. This commitment is repeatedly affirmed by the frequent creation ofnew and higher standards of competence in education, employment and the professions. Unlike prior times, which relied heavily on apprenticeship, today, achievement is often measured by standardized testing. Admission to graduate school generally requires a favorable score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), while prospective doctors and lawyers must take the MeAT and LSAT respectively to enter professional school and then must take licensing examinations before entering professional practice. Standardized testing is most visibly present in the case of the legal and medical professions, but it is also true of accounting and other occupations.
