Abstract

Only a limited amount of information is available to characterize the psychological adjustment of adults with severe learning difficulties. To facilitate research in this area, the relatively well developed literature on youngsters with learning disabilities was reviewed and juxtaposed with the data on adults that does exist in order to identify key questions for future research. The review was divided into five areas: overall adjustment, interpersonal difficulties, self-concept, difficulties with self-control, and family relationships. In a concluding section, mediating variables likely to contribute to the psychological adjustment ofadults with severe learning deficiencies are noted and suggestions are made with regard to service delivery and the design of effective treatments.
