Abstract

This paper considers the development of an implementation strategy for leisure counseling based on the Purdue Stepped Approach Model. The Purdue Model increases the intensity of interventions presented in a series. The model is grounded in the context of Neulinger's paradigm of leisure and its criteria of perceived freedom and intrinsic motivation. Theoretical and empirical support for the model is based on recent conceptualizations of leisure, issues in leisure counseling, development of a stepped approach for counseling from health psychology, and research from leisure allied disciplines. Several potential benefits of a stepped approach to leisure counseling are discussed. The suggestion is made that leisure counseling can benefit from models developed in other disciplines without being subsumed by them.
