Abstract

This paper describes a new theory of activity therapy for the regressed elderly. It utilizes a developmental approach and adaptive equipment as the method to promote movement. A pilot study was completed on 22 patients to determine the effect of this program on functional fitness levels. Significant improvements were found in strength, flexibility and ambulation. The findings suggest that activity therapists have a great opportunity to improve the quality of life of the very old, if active developmental programs are implemented.
