Abstract

The key defining characteristics of a profession are the establishment of a knowledge base and a service ideal or professional ethics. The issue of defining and applying professional and ethical behaviors to practice is central to any occupation aspiring to professional status. Professionals have undertaken and accomplished many functions and tasks which have brought the field of therapeutic recreation closer to the status of a profession. A recent study which assisted this movement defined and validated the entry level knowledge base needed for therapeutic recreation practice. One area examined in the study concerned the knowledge of professional and ethical behaviors. The important components of this area are discussed as well as implications for the transmission of this knowledge to future professionals.
