Abstract

Economic impact studies have been an effective tool in the “battle” to maintain existing tax support. Although the results of past studies have been used to present strong arguments in support of sport and recreation services, rarely do they address the cost of building and maintaining these facilities, nor do they address the opportunity cost of other development alternatives. The economic model presented in this study provides information on both the costs and benefits of a proposed project on a community and allows for a multi-year comparison of the proposed project’s benefits and costs. The results are designed to enable community officials to take advantage of opportunities without compromising their ability to maintain the level and quality of government services needed to attract future development and meet the ongoing needs of their constituents.
