Abstract

Increasing popularity in outdoor recreation has resulted in the designation of large outdoor recreation areas. Public agencies are challenged to attempt unfamiliar methods to successfully and efficiently manage large areas. One response has been the creation of joint management units.

The Selway Wild and Scenic River Corridor is a unique example of this type of management coordination. Management responsibilities are divided between the Westfork District of the Bitterroot National Forest and the Moose Creek District of the Nezperce National Forest.

Interforest management structure can increase efficiency of the management organization but can also create potential for inefficiency because of incentives which develop from division of management. This potential can be compounded by budget reductions. Opportunities exist to minimize these potential problems.?
