Abstract

Perspectives on adolescence have evolved dramatically since its inception as a socially constructed developmental period in the late 19th and early 20th century (Witt, 2005). The general sentiment toward adolescents has shifted over the last 100 years from individuals naturally prone to deviance to individuals with potential ready for development. Over this time, community recreation services such as Hull House, YMCA, and Recreation and Park Department facilities and programs have served as key developmental contexts for adolescents.
