Abstract

Skateboarding is a sport and a means of transportation that requires balance and stability. A child’s ability to perform a variety of motor skills is tied to their balance and stability profi ciency. Children who are visually impaired may experience delays in balance and stability resulting in lower levels of physical activity than sighted peers. The purpose of this article is trifold: (1) to provide pertinent information on the development of balance for children with visual impairments, (2) to offer appropriate lead-up activities with modifi cations, and (3) to introduce basic skateboarding modifi cations for children with visual impairments. Through increased balance and stability children with visual impairments may become stronger and more stable.
