Abstract

Despite great efforts to provide inclusive recreation experiences for people with disabilities, little research has identified interventions practices used within community agencies to facilitate these experiences. The purpose of this study was to describe current inclusive recreation processes used in special recreation associations (SRAs) in the state of Illinois. The results indicated that all of the inclusion processes identified by Schleien (1993) and the Montgomery County Department of Recreation (Smith, Austin, & Kennedy, 1996) were practiced by nearly all of the SRAs, with the exception of the development and distribution of an inclusion plan. Similarly, nearly all of the SRAs believed that all of the steps of the inclusion process to be important to the success of the inclusion experience.
