Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present curricula guidelines to foster cultural competence in therapeutic recreation education and practice. The authors have presented dimensions of multiculturalism and diversity, assumptions operating at the foundation of this article and three sources of multiculturalism misinterpretation. The authors have argued that the therapeutic recreation profession is premised upon Western individualistic values. Multicultural competencies are advocated by developing a multicultural curriculum. The integration model is suggested by the authors as an effective model to facilitate multicultural curriculum in therapeutic recreation pre-service and in-service educational programs.
