Integration, Productivity, and Independence Among Adults with Developmental Disabilities: Implications for Therapeutic Recreation

Abstract

Relationships among demographic and life style variables of adults, age 22 and older, with developmental disabilities (n = 199), and measures of integration, productivity, and independence were investigated. Multiple classification analysis within analysis of variance was used to examine relationships. Low to moderate levels of integration, productivity, and independence were reported. Four variables in combination explained 23 percent of integration. Four variables in combination explained 31 percent of productivity. Ten variables in combination explained 66 percent of independence. The variables of functional ability and age consistently appeared as predictors of integration, productivity, and independence. The value of identified predictors exists in their implications for designing therapeutic recreation services and research which promotes integration, productivity, and independence.
