Abstract

Program services to severely confused elderly residents lag behind services to other clients. Societal, institutional and other reasons for this state of affairs are discussed. Therapeutic recreators, to fulfill their responsibility in long term care settings, should familiarize themselves with the special requirements of these individuals.. It is essential, however, to deliver therapeutic recreation service rather than identify with the frequently prevailing "activities" approach to service. A model applying the recreation participation, leisure education and treatment components of therapeutic recreation service to this population is presented..
