Abstract

The development of the recreation profession has led to increased specialization which
has tended to focus recreators on narrowly· defined subfields. Common to ~ t;hese
.subfields, however, is the recreation experience of the individual. Based on this commonality,
it is possible to trace conditions in society illustrating the breadth of recreation's
therapeutic qualities. Effective argument for this, however, depends on the
recognition of the value based components of therapeutic recreation and on being
prepared to accept research into values, i.e.,.philosophy, as an integral part of research
in recreation generally and therapeutic recreation specifically.
