Abstract

The Therapeutic Recreation Section of Montgomery County Recreation Department, Maryland has established a recreation integration initiative which involves all programs offered to the ,community at large and to disabled persons in particular. Three mainstreaming staff positions have been approved and over $70,000 has been allocated. Operationalizing the integration process has been achieved through the development of Challenge Levels. Specific accommodations including transportation, mainstreaming companions, interpreters, financial assistance, or minor equipment adaptions are offered to participants when needed. Regular recreation staff and volunteers receive training in preparation for integration. Ongoing evaluation is being implemented to ensure the goals of the mainstreaming initiative. During 1985-1986 262 disabled participants were fully mainstreamed.
