Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory investigation was to ascertain if differences existed between adult men with congenital orthopedic disabilities, adult men with acquired orthopedic disabilities, and nondisabled adult men with respect to their preferences for recreation and free-time activities. An interview based on a prepared questionnaire was used to collect data from  173, 20-40 year old, males of whom 53 had congenital orthopedic disabilities, 60 had acquired orthopedic disabilities, and 60 were able-bodied. The analyses were performed by using one-way analysis of variance. The findings revealed the groups held similar perceptions with respect to recreation and free time activities. The only significant finding was that subjects with congenital disabilities, in contrast to the others, believed recreation programs should be integrated.
