Abstract

To set the stage for development of an examination to be part of the certification process for Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, a multistep procedure was carried out. A distinguished advisory committee set forth, with the assistance of measurement psychologists, comprehensive lists of professional responsibilities and the knowledge needed to carry out those responsibilities. The responsibilities and knowledge areas were judged for their importance by a national sample of 849 Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. The knowledge areas judged most important constitute a body of knowledge that can be assessed by means of a certification examination.
