The Instructional Status of Clinical Supervision in Therapeutic Recreation Curricula

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the instructional status of clinical supervision in therapeutic recreation curricula. Two curriculum questionnaires (one for an undergraduate program and one for a graduate program) were designed and mailed to therapeutic recreation coordinators at 90 educational institutions throughout the United States. The subjects were identified via the 1987-88 SPRE Curriculum Catalog. A return rate of 77.7% was achieved and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results indicated that although the overwhelming majority ofthe respondents believed it was essential to provide classroom instruction in the concepts of clinical supervision in both curricula, approximately half actually integrated instruction in this area into their curriculum plans. Recommendations for incorporating instruction in clinical supervision into therapeutic recreation curriculum plans are presented.
