Abstract

Credentialing mechanisms, which define, measure and attest to professional competence, are often problematic for individuals who attempt to create and oversee the programs. There are a myriad of concerns and issues which are complex, inter-related and inter-dependent. Licensure, as a form of credentialing, is one of the more complex options, as it requires the passage of state regulations and the implementation of a testing program. The purpose of this article is to outline some of the more prevalent issues of initiating and administering a state credentialing program. While the major focus of this article is on licensure, other state plans for therapeutic recreation personnel are reviewed.
