Abstract

Incarceration as a social issue is a little studied topic in leisure and recreation studies. However, the sheer magnitude and complexity of the system as a social institution and social context needs to be more thoroughly examined. The system affects literally millions of people per year, but perhaps none more so than incarcerated women. Because of their unique needs and characteristics, the female offenders are more often punished than rehabilitated. One avenue to correct this problem is through the provision of well-conceived and well-conceptualized leisure/recreation services. A review of relevant service provision principles are provided to initiate the examination of appropriate leisure/recreation programs aimed at treatment and rehabilitation.
