Abstract

History is abundant with examples of how people with disabilities have.been subjects of exploitation through forms of entertainment such as court jesters and freak shows. Despite progressive legislation and awareness, people with disabilities are still exploited today through subtle means of amusement such as horror movies, tabloid magazines, and cartoons. The purpose of this paper is to raise the awareness of professionals working with people with disabilities regarding circumstances of subtle exploitation. Specifically, this paper outlines how people have, historically and currently, exploited people with disabilities by viewing them as objects ofamusement and entertainment. Additionally, this paper discusses the negative effects this attitude currently can have on the people with disabilities today.. Finally, the responsibilities and opportunities to change these attitudes of professionals such as therapeutic recreation specialists will be discussed. Specific examples of historic and current exploitation are outlined.
