Abstract

Older adults with disabilities are increasingly likely to seek opportunities to participate in integrated recreation alongside their non-disabled peers in community-based recreation and leisure settings. This case study reports on an ongoing collaborative action research project designed to respond to this realization in one community. The involvement of the local caromunity of service providers and users was considered critical to the action research, which has been conducted in the community development paradigm. The community has been supported in taking ownership of the challenge through an action research process. This has engaged key individuals in identifying possible strategies that would utilize the communities' collective strengths to maximize the ability of all older adults to participate in integrated leisure and recreation.
