Collaborating to Create an Integrated Camping Program: Design and Evaluation

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present one model of integrated residential camping in detail and to provide a resource for other models. A description of the collaborative program, unique aspects ofthe program which create strengths and weaknesses, and an evaluation of the program are presented. The program focuses on creating an inclusionary environment responsive to the needs and interests of children with all types and degrees of disabilities. Anecdotal information on interactions and relationships is provided as well as descriptive data on shifts in attitudes toward individuals with disabilities to show the benefits of inclusionary environments for all. Parental responses to the integrated program are provided. Other models are included to demonstrate the variety, creativity and feasibility ofinclusionary residential camping.
