Abstract

Though the bulk of information which we process daily is taken in through observation, this process is not systematic enough to be useful in practice or research. This article provides guidelines for the design and implementation of systematic observation instruments for the purpose of assessing client or subject behaviors. Because systematic observation is most appropriate for recording overt behaviors, examples of assessing clients' social functioning are presented. Six published tools used in the assessment of social functioning are briefly reviewed to enable the reader to become more familiar with such instruments.
