Instructions for Authors

Submissions will be accepted for review by the editorial team with the understanding that the content is unpublished and is not being simultaneously submitted for publication and/or review elsewhere. Although an international audience is encouraged to submit manuscripts, only manuscripts written in English can be accepted for review and publication.

Submission Categories

Regular papers: This manuscript category includes two primary divisions: (a) quantitative and/or qualitative research findings and (b) conceptual or theoretical discussions. Manuscript length is generally 20-30 double-spaced pages (6,000-9,000 words) including all references, tables, and figures.

Essays, Practices, and Commentaries: This manuscript category focuses on critical essays, best practices, and commentaries related to philosophies, historical perspectives, policies, pedagogy, or reviews of outdoor education and leadership.  Each manuscript will undergo peer review to assess the manuscript on the following primary aspects: (a) the relevance of ideas or topic to the mission of the journal, (b) significance and potential impact of the contribution, and (c) clarity of expression. Manuscript length is generally 8-12 double-spaced pages (2,500-3,500 words) including all references, tables, and figures.

Research Notes: This manuscript category focuses on research studies presented in a condensed format which: (a) explore new research ideas, theories, or questions; (b) use novel research methods or make other unique methodological contributions; (c) extend the understanding of a previous research study; (d) comment on prior research; and, (e) replicate or fail to replicate reported results. Manuscript length is generally 8-12 double-spaced pages (2,500-3,500 words) including all references, tables, and figures.

Book Reviews: Book reviews should be approximately 1,000-1,200 words in length. In addition to providing a clear overview of the book, the review should offer a critical evaluation of the book. Please click here for additional information on guidelines for writing book reviews.

To be considered for publication, all manuscripts must be submitted for review as a Microsoft Word or RTF file through the Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education, and Leadership website: http://js.sagamorepub.com/jorel.

Copy must be prepared according to the following guidelines:

Form

  • All materials must be typed, double spaced, and formatted for 8.5 x 11-in. paper using a 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-in. (2.54 cm) margins on all sides (top, bottom, right, and left, including abstract and references).
  • All pages should be numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner.
  • A running head should be included on each page of the manuscript.
  • Consecutive line numbers should appear through the entire manuscript for review procedures.
  • The first page of the manuscript should include the title, abstract, and keywords. The manuscript text should begin at the top of the second page.
  • Author name(s) should not appear in the manuscript to maintain anonymity during the review process. Exceptions include in-text citations and references.
  • Each table, drawing, illustration, photograph, map, and so forth must be prepared and included within the text of the manuscript (not on separate pages) where the author would like the item to be placed. Tables, figures, and so forth should be numbered and labeled according to guidelines in Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th ed.) and should be legible.

Abstract

  • Each submission should be summarized in an abstract with a maximum of 150 words.
  • Submissions without an abstract will not be reviewed.
  • The title of the submission should be included above the abstract.
  • The abstract will preface the main body of the submission on a separate page and should enable the reader to get an overview of the entire paper, with particular attention to the need for the paper and possible professional implications as appropriate.
  • Three to five key words (in lowercase, not capitalized) describing the content of the submission should be provided at the end of the abstract.

References

Include only references to sources cited in the manuscript. References and in-text citations should follow APA Style. Include digital object identifier (DOI) numbers for references for which DOIs are available.

References should appear on a Reference page at the end of the manuscript, not at the foot of each page. Follow APA Style.

Spelling and Hyphenation

The authority is Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (2005).

Permissions

If any figure, table, or more than a few lines of text from previously published materials are included in a manuscript, obtain written permission for replication from the copyright holder.
