Call for Associate Editors
The Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education, and Leadership (JOREL) is seeking nominations to fill Associate Editor positions for a 3-year term.
Journal Mission: To improve outdoor recreation, education, and leadership through the publication and dissemination of peer-reviewed manuscripts centered on professional practice, research, and theoretical discussions.
Aims and Scope: JOREL publishes quality manuscripts to disseminate the latest knowledge related to outdoor recreation, education, and leadership to help develop theory and practice. The journal seeks quantitative and/or qualitative research findings, conceptual or theoretical discussions, or program practices. Relevant topic areas (centered on outdoor recreation, outdoor education, or outdoor leadership)
for the journal include, but are not limited to, outdoor recreation, adventure recreation, outdoor education, outdoor leadership, pedagogy, administration, programming, risk management, wilderness medicine, certification, participant behavior, trends, diversity, training, and outcomes. JOREL accepts manuscripts in the following categories: Regular Papers; Research Notes; and Essays, Practices, and Commentaries.
JOREL Associate Editor Qualifications and Responsibilities
Qualifications
- Recognized scholarly and/or professional contributions to the field of outdoor recreation, outdoor education, and outdoor leadership through service, leadership, exemplary programs, and/or publications.
- Awareness and understanding of the theory, multidisciplinary approaches, best practices, and evidence-based or practice-based study of outdoor recreation, education, and leadership.
Responsibilities
- Associate editors assist the editor-in-chief in duties related to the editorial management of JOREL.
- Associate editors review manuscripts, select and monitor reviewers’ work, and recommend topics and material that will contribute to JOREL using Sagamore’s Manuscript Management System.
- Associate editors are responsible for maintaining records of reviewers and reviewed manuscripts and transmitting review information to the editor and Sagamore’s Manuscript Management System.
- Associate editors are asked to attend 1–2 annual meetings via conference call or at the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) or Wilderness Education Association (WEA) national conference and to respond to electronic communications.
- Associate editors are responsible for implementing editorial policies and procedures as determined by the Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor, and Sagamore Publishing.

- Cover letter stating the candidate’s desire to be an associate editor including expertise and interests relative to the journal’s potential content.
- Brief and up-to-date personal résumé or academic vitae to verify expertise.
