Abstract

Welcome to the second issue of the JOREL. This issue much like the

first has a variety of articles that will appeal to both academics and

practitioners alike. Matthew Hartman, Bruce Martin, Robin Mittelstaedt,

and David Bower explore the development of ecological literacy

among novice outdoor leaders from a number of perspectives. In

their article, Adrienne Cachelin, Karen Paisley, and Dan Dustin contend

that outdoor educators, specifically those involved in higher

education, have both an opportunity and an obligation to lead the sustainability

revolution. Using a case study, Jenny Lloyd-Strovas and

Katharine Hayhoe explore the various approaches to tracking the carbon

footprint of outdoor recreation programs. Using qualitative methodology,

Bitsy Wedin explores the experiences of 11 women who

completed a 46 day, 700 mile canoe expedition to the Nunavut and

Saskatchewan territories in Northern Canada. The final article by

Eric Frauman and Diane Waryold examines the impact of a wilderness

based outdoor orientation program on college student perceptions of

life effectiveness.
