This paper is a conceptual discussion informed by practice, which offers a model of Place-Based Expeditionary Learning (PBEL) appropriate for integrating outdoor and experiential learning experiences into urban classrooms. The discussion examines issues related to the accessibility of outdoor experiential education programs, defines PBE and EL, and demonstrates the need for urban youth to develop a sense of place. The PBEL model is intended to be useful as a tool for individual educators in a variety of settings and contexts by providing a conceptual framework for integrating outdoor and experiential learning experiences through cultural and nature studies. Possible applications of such a model and suggestions for further research are offered.
