Abstract

Lessons from the Legends is a series of 10 inspirational videos created for park and recreation classroom and staff training purposes. Each video depicts an important theme uncovered in a larger content analysis of a cross-section of in-depth interviews with park and recreation practitioners and educators selected as Legends in Parks and Recreation by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration. We present each video’s script as an article with a link to its accompanying video that brings the story to life. Readers are invited to access the link and download the video for educational purposes as each article appears in Legends and Legacies.Subscribe to JPRA

Author Biography

Kelly S. Bricker, University of Utah

 Dr. Bricker is a Professor and Director of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism at the University of Utah. She completed her Ph.D. research with the Pennsylvania State University, where she specialized in sustainable tourism and protected area management. She has research and teaching interests in ecotourism, sense of place, natural resource management, and the impacts of tourism.  Dr. Bricker has authored and edited books on sustainability, which highlight case studies in environmental and societal issues, in the Sustainable Tourism & the Millennium Development Goals: Effecting Positive Change; educational texts focused on adventure education in Adventure Programming and Travel for the 21st Century; graduate centered education, in the book De-Mystifying Theories in Tourism Research; and most recently, co-edited This Land Is Your Land: Toward a Better Understanding of Nature’s Resiliency-Building and Restorative Power for Armed Forces Personnel, Veterans, and Their Families (Sagamore Publishing, LLC). Dr. Bricker is Vice-Chair of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and serves Tourism and Protected Area Specialist Group of the IUCN. With partners in OARS and her husband, she developed an ecotourism operation called Rivers Fiji.
