Abstract

Project FRESH (Fitness, Recreation and Education for Senior Health) was a collaboration between a public college and local senior centers serving a black and Hispanic population. FRESH was designed to provide a structured, ten-session, recreational exercise and swimming program utilizing the colleges state-of-the-art sports and fitness complex. To encourage minority elderly to participate in fitness activities and enhance their participation in leisure-related programs, specific planning and implementation strategies were followed. Evaluations by participants and project staff were completed. Seniors indicated that they exceeded their goals for participation and one-third purchased passes to independently continue to attend the facility. Implications for managers include cooperative planning and sensitivity to community needs, utilizing unique features of the host agency and recognizing market segments.
