Parklands as Paradox: The Search for Logic in the Public's Parklands

W. F. LaPage

A new administrative ethic for America's parklands, based on partnerships, is proposed to resolve eight major paradoxes and multiple inconsistencies in contemporary park management. Through a leadership strategy of broadly shared responsibility, significant gains are possible in cooperation, quality of public use, accountability, community outreach, contemporary relevance, and political support. And by shifting focus from resource protection to resource appreciation and asset management with partners, the negatives of closures, restrictions, reduced staffing, and low levels of public service can be minimized or even avoided.

Parks, parklands, park policy, park practices, park protection, partnerships, public lands, public use.
