With the increase in personal injury accidents and the growing litigious nature of the American public, landscape architects and designers of park and recreation facilities need to understand the requirements for incorporating safety into the design of recreation facilities. The designers must be aware of the basis for personal liability and the standard of care for design professionals, and incorporate this standard in their professional conduct. This article suggests legal and planing guidelines for incorporating safety in the design process. Designer responsibility is covered. Suggestions for preparing plans and specifications are advanced and information targeted at providing safe and enjoyable facilities while minimizing the prospects for litigation is thoroughly presented.
