Abstract

The 1984 National Health Interview Survey provides baseline data on participation in programs for older adults. Gender, age, health, marital status, residence, and income significantly identify those who engage in senior center programs. Health status is the major factor in use of in-home services. Women of modest means living alone and in good health most often attend senior centers. Organizational participation clearly differs from the use of services. The results suggest that although participation rates are low, there is considerable variety in the life conditions of those who choose to engage in age-segregated activities.
