Abstract

This paper outlines the recent history of the movement to designate various lands as conservation areas in mainland Portugal, including the country's only national park, the Peneda Geres, and a number of natural parks, nature reserves, classified sites, and protected landscape areas. Following a brief historical overview, the different types of areas are discussed, along with specific examples. In each case, the principal management objectives provide the context for an appraisal of policies relating to recreation and tourism.?
