Abstract

Performance appraisal systems are expected to produce a multiplicity of results including improving employee performance, letting an employee know where he or she stands in terms of quality and quantity of work, identifying potential for promotion, recommending training, establishing compensation, and providing documentation for disciplinary action. All of these results are expected to be accomplished by the manager. This study looks at performance appraisal procedures in 162 public leisure service agencies in Illinois, details some of the problems with current procedures, and offers some recommendations for improvement.
