Abstract

As an alternative to the traditional, positivistic method for conducting an evaluation, naturalistic or responsive methods are proposed as more useful in understanding the complexity of recreation pro gram and service successes and failures. This paper describes the responsive evaluation approach, offers a rationale about why it is useful in understanding the effectiveness of recreation programs and services, and outlines how such an evaluation may be conducted. An illustrative example is also presented.
