Computers in recreation, research application, children, management application.

Rec-Trek is a public-access computer system for children and teens in Hartford, Connecticut. As an interactive information service, this program provides each user with a personalized printout, recommending a recreational activity which matches the needs and interests expressed by the user. "Recreation" is defined broadly to include sports, arts, and leisure activities. Rec-Trek also serves as a management tool because it creates a data base about user interests as children use the program. Data are analyzed and applied to management, planning and budgeting decisions. This innovative project is helping a municipal parks and recreation department to become a "facilitator" for all types of recreation and leisure activities, without the added reponsibility of being the "provider" of all programs and activities.
