Abstract

The National Recreation and Park Association's recently approved certification plan, indicates that professional status be contingent upon completion of mandatory continuing education requirements. This could represent the beginning of a national commitment to mandatory continuing education in the recreation profession.This paper explores the issue of mandatory continuing education in the professions and its implications for the leisure service profession. The distinction between voluntary and mandatory educational policies is a most critical one; the purpose of a mandatory program is to control, and control entails requirements and sanctions. Arguments for and against mandatory continuing professional education are presented, as well as the growing body of knowledge regarding continuing education in generaL Also discussed are the nature and forms in continuing education which the leisure service professional might take.?
