Mindfulness and Well-Being: Implications for TR Practice

Abstract


Mindfulness training is a potentially powerful therapeutic recreation (TR) intervention that can enhance the well-being of clients. In addition to the direct, well-documented benefits of formal and informal mindfulness practices,
mindfulness has become a central component of the new generation of mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral therapies. TR practitioners can help clients acquire the mindfulness skills necessary to increase their positive emotion, decrease unnecessary suffering, and create a life of personal growth and meaning. The purpose of this paper is to delineate the theoretical and empirical relationships between mindfulness and well-being and discuss the implications for TR practice.
