Abstract

This paper summarizes literature on minority and ethnic variations in outdoor recreation participation and behavior with particular attention to black Americans. Four theories explanatory of variations are reviewed including the soceoeconomic demographic theory, theory of marginality, opportunity theory, and the ethnicity perspective. Recommendations for future research and provision of outdoor recreation services are provided. The article is a version of a paper solicted by the Presidenfs Commission on Americans Outdoors.
