Abstract

Adventure recreation· is characterized by a sense of challenge in the presence of risk. Challenge is greatly influenced by the perception of the individual;  participants are influenced by the perception of others. Because the degree of challenge can be manipulated, adventure recreation has potential to appeal to all individuals regardless of skill level. Adventure recreation focuses on involvement ofself rather than competition with others. Therapeutic recreation specialists can facilitate participation in adventure recreation by providing leisure education programs that focus on knowledge of safety, awareness of resources, acquisition of activity skills, enhancement of decision-making skills, and providing knowledge related to participation opportunities.
