Abstract

The manuscript synthesizes the development of leisure-related research with respect to older adults through the past half century. It traces the social and environmental forces which influenced the emergence of leisure-oriented aging research, and it reviews the major themes, research methods, and subjects of investigations which resulted. Numerous examples of published works are cited to support the author's conceptualization of the development of this field. Finally, projections regarding the aging and leisure research agenda for the remainder ofthe century are offered.
