Abstract

Persons with traumatic brain injuries pose a unique challenge for therapists employed in rehabilitation settings. Head injuries result in a myriad of functional deficits, depending on the location and extent of the brain damage. The intent of this article is to review basic brain functions, potential limitations of injuries, and various types of rehabilitation services and settings. This background information is provided to support the need for and application of therapeutic recreation services. Specific suggestions for goal-oriented activities are outlined.
