A Study of AIDS Risk-Behavior Knowledge among Therapeutic Recreation Specialists in New York State

Arnold H. Grossman, Orazio Caroleo

The purpose of the study was to determine the AIDS risk-behavior knowledge oftherapeutic recreation specialists attending a state-wide therapeutic recreation forum in New York State. Eighty-two professionals completed the AIDS Risk Behavior Knowledge Test and correctly answered 89 percent ofthe questions, with a mean score of 35.67 (SO = 2.38) on the 40-item test. Analysis by questions indicated that there is some AIDS risk-behavior knowledge known by all respondents and that there is much misinformation in some areas: misconceptions relating to HIV and AIDS; and a lack of knowledge related to high-risk sexual and drug practices, and risk reduction steps.
