Abstract

A six-year longitudinal panel study was undertaken to investigate the impact of retirement on participation in leisure activities. A pattern of mild decline in overall levels of activity coupled with a great deal of individual variation was documented. Moreover, leisure involvement prior to retirement was an important factor in retirement activity and adjustment. The evidence presented suggests that the relationship between retirement and leisure patterns is more complex than generally assumed.
