Abstract

In the spring of 2010, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Robert D. Herman, profes-sor of Organizational Behavior in the Department of Public Affairs at the University of Mis-souri–Kansas City (UMKC). We talked about his ways of teaching and of facilitating learning in the classroom. Bob has been teaching students in the Master of Public Administration program at UMKC for over 35 years, and he provides us here with some valuable perspectives on the field and on teaching. He is in many ways a founding father of the field of nonprofit management. Many of us know him as the Editor of the Jossey-Bass Handbook of Nonprofit Leaderships and Management, first published in 1994 and updated in 2004 (The 2010 edition has been published under the editorship of Dave Renz). Bob is currently enjoying retirement.
