Abstract

In response to the tremendous growth of the nonprofit sector, the number of nonprofit leadership education programs across the nation has grown exponentially, and academic programs in this field continue to develop in scope and sophistication. Universities have responded to the climate of opportunity produced by nonprofit sector expansion by committing long-term support for nonprofit management academic programs and research (Bell, 2011) and by seeking the “best place” for this relatively new discipline within academia (Cyert, 1988; Mirabella & Wish, 2000; Worth, 2014). Rockhurst University, a Jesuit University in Kansas City, Missouri, is one such program; nonprofit management education at Rockhurst has progressed over the past 40 years from an undergraduate certificate program offered within the liberal arts to a bachelor’s degree situated within the professional studies to a full array of degree, concentration, and certificate programs for undergraduate and graduate students housed in the school of management. The changes and processes shared within this case study may assist other program administrators who anticipate significant transitions for nonprofit management programs or centers as the field of nonprofit studies continues to develop.
