Abstract

Approaches to intervention for children and adults with learning disabilities and other handicapping conditions have been developed for over a century. Often these approaches were developed for specific skills or areas of achievement such as reading, decoding, spelling, mathematics, or written expression. In other instances broad approaches such as direct instruction or strategy instruction were developed. Some of these approaches now have a strong research base and were described in the preceding papers. A recent metaanalysis of intervention research, done by Swanson (2000), provides an excellent contribution to the field.
