The Use of Community Resources by Families of Young Children with Special Needs

Abstract

In order to meet the needs and concerns offamilies ofyoung children with disabilities, both formal and informal support systems may be necessary. The fonnal support system consists of the assistance that professionals provide. Informal support can include a network of extended family, friends, neighbors, and community organizations and activities. This article focuses on the use of community resources to support families of young children with special needs. A rationale for the use of these resources is described; strategies for identifying and building these resources are described; possible barriers are explained; and, recommendations which can increase the participation ofthe target families are presented. The use of community resources can strengthen family functioning and facilitate inclusion in the community.
